Your Local FARMacy-Bushland, TX

“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”

Something that Charles Murphy and his family live by on their farm in Bushland, Texas; about a two-acre property filled with vegetables, and a few fruits mixed in. Charles, his wife and their three kids: Charlize (12), Gentry (8), and Charles AKA Buzz (6) all pitch in to keep the farm running.

“The kids love it, and I think it’s very important for them to know where their food is coming from,” Charles told us. The Murphy family doesn’t use any pesticides, herbicides, or equipment when growing and harvesting their produce. They pull their own weeds, pick the vegetables themselves and upkeep the garden with just a garden hoe and shovel. They grow unique heirloom variety vegetables and sell large amounts every Saturday at the Amarillo farmers market.

“We stopped eating fast food and started making changes in our diet. We wanted to know what we were eating and what we were giving to our kids; the best way to do that is to grow it yourself.”

Your Local FARMacy is an up-and-coming farm with big plans for the future including educating children and the public, internships on the farm, and helping more people start their own backyard gardens.

September is a great growing season for vegetables, so be sure and stop by Your Local FARMacy Saturdays at the Amarillo farmers market.
