Ogallala Commons (OC) is initiating Permian Basin Foodshed as a toolbox to inform and educate the public regarding locally grown food in the South Plains region/West Texas region. OC is a nonprofit education and leadership organization with 4 core programs, including rebuilding local food systems. The purpose of this website is to feature information about growing, purchasing, cooking, and celebrating locally produced food in the region—where oil and gas production is king, and where sagebrush and shortgrass prairies predominate, along with cotton farms.
Most of the region’s crops becomes feed for livestock or end up in global supply chains, while locals generally eat very little that comes from our land and our soil. Permian Basin Foodshed hopes to inform and equip residents to grow and eat food that is fresh, more nutrient-dense and produced in our home region.
