There’s nothing like sipping on fine wine. For a day out on the town, a relaxing night at home, or a Thursday patio night with local food and music, look no further than Lubbock winery, McPherson Cellars.
Conveniently located in downtown Lubbock, McPherson Cellars is a winery worth a visit! Whether you prefer white or red, you are sure to find a wine that lights up your taste buds. After the first taste, you’ll be coming back for more.
The McPherson name is no stranger to Texas grape growing. Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson is considered a pioneer of the Texas Wine Industry. A Chemistry professor at Texas Tech University, Doc partnered with Bob Reed to found Llano Estacado Winery in 1976—one of the first post-Prohibition wineries in Texas—proudly located in Lubbock. Doc was a prime grape grower and was the first in Texas to plant Sangiovese in his Sagmor Vineyard.
Winemaking stayed with the family as Doc passed. His sons, Kim and Jon have been in the business for over 30 years, and Kim’s daughter followed in their footsteps as well. After graduating from Texas Tech University, Kim studied enology and viticulture at the University California, Davis. After working in California, Kim returned to work at Llano Estacado for his father. With several years’ experience working for Llano Estacado and then CapRock Winery, Kim started his own label in 2000.
In fall of 2008, McPherson Cellars opened for business. The building has rich history—it originally housed Lubbock’s Coca Cola bottling plant from the 1930s. You can visit the winery to enjoy a tasting and tour the wineries, or just enjoy a wine by the glass or bottle in the tasting room or courtyard. During the spring and summer, the winery stays open later for Thursday nights on the patio, featuring local food and live music.
McPherson Cellars wines can be found on restaurant lists throughout the state. The wines are even distributed in many states outside Texas—a clear indication that the local industry is thriving and McPherson Cellars’ contribution to better farming and winemaking in Texas is being noticed. It goes to show that if you’re looking for quality wine…it’s right down the street.
Contact McPherson Cellars Monday through Saturday from 11AM-7PM at 806-687-9463 for a visit, or to order wines online.
